Windows CentralControl 6.72 is intended for use with Windows Agents 6.72 (32 and 64-bit), as well as older Agents. The CentralControl program provides a centralized point of control for managing backups and restores for computers on a small or large network. The CentralControl application can remotely configure, monitor and manage all backup and restore activities for a Vault. Backups can be configured to copy selected files, databases, or a complete system, to a remote Vault via a local network (intranet) or the Internet (as well as to local devices). Backups can occur on a regularly scheduled basis, or they can be run immediately (unscheduled, or "ad hoc"). All backup and restore functions are monitored and are recorded in the form of log files. Users can also be notified via email if a backup succeeds or fails. Note: Windows Agents now use a new VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) based open file manager for backup of open or locked files. OTM can still be used with older Jobs or in a custom manner, but is not used by default. ----------------------------------------------------------- 1.1 Release History Version 6.70.2011, December 17th, 2009 Version 6.70.2011a, February 22nd, 2010 Version 6.72.4005, April 30th, 2010 ----------------------------------------------------------- 1.2 Supported Platforms This version of Windows CentralControl supports Server Agent and Plug-In versions 6.72 and older. See the "Shipping Products Chart" for supported platforms for Windows CentralControl. ___________________________________________________________ =========================================================== 2 FEATURES Support for Windows Agent 6.72 (with added support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2). Support for HP-UX Agent 6.72. Support for VMware ESX Server Agent 6.71. Restoring to an alternate location: For Agent versions 6.72 and above, the “Preserve folder structure” checkbox has been removed from the Restore Wizard. If you have selected your restore data using the recursive option, the directory structure is restored starting from the selection point of the included item within the selected alternate directory. ___________________________________________________________ =========================================================== 3 INSTALLATION NOTES 3.1 Installation Requirements The installation requirements for the CentralControl program are as follows. Hardware -------- * CPU and RAM - Should meet the basic requirements of your Operating System, as prescribed by Microsoft. * Video properties of 16-bit (or greater) for optimum GUI display * At least 30 MB of available disk space Software -------- * Director 5.53, 6.04, or above. Note that the System Recovery Agent requires at least a version 6.03 Vault. * Agent 6.72 or older * OS - with IE 6.0 minimum. See the "Shipping Products Chart" for Windows CentralControl supported platforms. * Network - A TCP/IP stack (to communicate with Agent systems) ----------------------------------------------------------- 3.2 Conditional Requirements Each machine you plan to back up must have the Agent software installed and configured with CentralControl. See the CentralControl Operations Guide for detailed information. This guide is available at: http://csp.i365.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------- 3.3 Licensing Windows CentralControl itself does not require a license to function. Agents that require backups also do not require licenses. But to be able to back up to (and restore from) a Vault, a valid license is required on the Vault. Check with your service provider. Licensing documentation is available in the "Director Operations Guide". ----------------------------------------------------------- 3.4 Install/Uninstall Procedure Installation Guides for CentralControl and Agents are available at: http://csp.i365.com/ ----------------------------------------------------------- 3.5 Installation Files The CentralControl installation kit includes: * CentralControl application * Online help files * Note: Installation of the Agent places the VVClMsg.dll file in the System directory. This file contains the error codes and resource strings that the event viewer uses to display the Agent messages. ___________________________________________________________ =========================================================== 4 KNOWN ISSUES and FIXES 4.1 Known Issues On a secured SSH only HP-UX system, attempts to authenticate via Windows CentralControl fails as root or user with GID 0 membership. VVAgent.XLOG indicates a 'Shared object load failure'. A restricted SSH only system is not supported by Windows CentralControl. A restricted SSH only system is supported by Web CentralControl. (18237) A Trusted HP-UX System allows for a Password Security Policy of up to 40 Characters. However, Windows CentralControl's password length limit is 31 characters. HP-UX trusted systems are supported, but passwords must not be greater than 31 characters. (17839) The Run As and Credentials tabs can be missing from the Job properties dialog after changing the admin password on the Agent. As a result, the SharePoint tree is not available in the Source tab. WORKAROUND: Close and re-open the Windows CentralControl application. (13199) "Common File Exclusion" option is disabled during "Create Task" for SharePoint but is enabled during "Edit Task". (13142) Vista and Windows Server 2008 no longer support .hlp files. WinHlp32.exe, which is used to run .hlp files, is no longer installed as part of Vista. You will get a message "Failed to launch help" (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607#appliesto). Users can download a Microsoft update to run .hlp files, but Microsoft does not allow it to be distributed by third parties. The update is available at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607 Some VPR files are still created as Jobname#.vpr. The naming convention for cross catalog (range of Safeset) restores is Jobname_Safeset#.vpr. Select "Restore Data Streams Only" to restore all data streams. "Ignore alternate data streams" is always set to "No". Alternate data streams are restored. Windows CentralControl issues error messages during a restore from another computer using the same Safeset: "Connection to the Vault is not using encryption" and "Failed to create synchronize log file" in VVAgent-*.Xlog, and: “SSET-I-4748 Connection to the Vault is using AES encryption" in BUAgent-*.Xlog. If your default.lng file is older, and you launch a Repair on Windows CentralControl, the default.lng file is not replaced. Other language files are replaced. This situation occurs when both CentralControl and the Agent are installed to the same folder. They share the language sub-folder between them. If Windows CentralControl is installed in the same folder as the Agent, it will always assume the Agent is English. If you want to run Windows CentralControl in English, and the Agent in another language, you must install Windows CentralControl in a separate folder from the Agent. ----------------------------------------------------------- 4.2 Fixes for 6.72 In previous versions, when you configured a Job using a wildcard filter, Windows CentralControl used an incorrect encoding pattern for / characters in SharePoint file selection. This has been fixed in this release.
